Location The mine lies in the hamlet of Tankerville, which is
a few miles south of Minsterley in Shropshire. From the North - head for the
A5 Shrewsbury bypass from either east or west and turn down the A488 south
signposted for Bishops Castle. Follow the A488 through Hanwood and
Pontesbury. At Minsterley turn left at the roundabout along the A488 and
after 2 miles look for a bus shelter on the right. Turn left just after this
along a minor road signposted to Snailbeach. Follow this road through the
villages of Snailbeach and Tankerville and park in the layby as shown on the
map below. From the South - head for
Bishops Castle and take the A488 north signposted for Shrewsbury. Follow the
A488 until you go down a steep wooded hill. A mile after this look for a bus
shelter on the left. Turn right just before this along a minor road
signposted to Snailbeach. Follow this road through the villages of Snailbeach
and Tankerville and park in the layby as shown on the map below.
The mine is split
into two separate parcels of land and there is no public right of way between
them. Please do not upset our neighbours by crossing their land. Ovenpipe Site There is currently
no public right of access to this part of the site and you can only visit it
in the company of a Trustee. Although the main site is just across the
farmer's track, there is no right of way over this for the public. Main Site Note that there is
no public right of way to the site but there is a concessionary path open
throughout the year except New Year's Day. This is the ONLY way in for the
public at the moment - please avoid disturbing our neighbours by using any
other access. There is no car parking on site and it is not easy to access by
wheelchair at present, since there are a steep descents, but we are
considering how to improve this in the future.
The site would have looked quite different when
working – see the old map below.
NOTE THAT YOU ENTER THE SITE AT YOUR OWN RISK AND
YOU SHOULD BE AWARE THAT ANY OLD MINE SITE CAN BE
DANGEROUS. Conducted Tours It may be possible for a Trust member
to lead your party around the mine, giving you a description of the features
and history. Note that there is no
underground access for the public. If you are interested contact Peter Sheldrake 11 Brook Rd Pontesbury Shrewsbury SY5 0QZ T. 01743-790613 There will be a charge will he will discuss with you. |
