Snailbeach Lead Mine Trips
into Robert’s
/Perkin’s Level |
|
|
|
Apart from Heritage Weekend in September, this mine
level is only opened to the public on the dates below Book now for an adventurous trip
underground
Visitors will be taken along a 20th century tunnel, driven to meet several chambers where the white mineral barite was mined. It also connected with workings deep in the mine. There is ankle deep water at the entrance so wellies are advisable. Helmets and electric headlamps will be provided. Whether
your interest is history or geology there is lots to see. At places there are beautiful white
formations of gypsum, a large vein of barite and traces of galena (lead
ore). Your guide will explain how the
miners extracted the ore. See
the last heading where, in 1955, the miners decided to give up mining at
Snailbeach forever, thus bringing to an end 2,000 years of mining. Click HERE for a virtual
tour of the mine in pictures. You must book in advance as numbers on each trip are limited Tour
